How do I close my Lloyds Bank account?

How to close a Lloyds Bank current account through the app, online, branch or post, and what to do first with balances, overdrafts and payments.

Quick answer

You may be able to close a Lloyds current account in the mobile app or through Lloyds' messaging service in online banking. Branch, telephone and postal routes are also available. Before closure, clear any overdraft, move the remaining balance and deal with Direct Debits, standing orders and other payments unless you are using the Current Account Switch Service.

Decide whether you are closing or switching

If the goal is to move your everyday banking to another UK provider, a full Current Account Switch Service move is often cleaner than closing Lloyds manually. The switch transfers eligible regular payments and the balance, redirects payments sent to the old details and closes the old current account as part of the process.

If you simply want the account gone and are not switching, you are responsible for moving or cancelling regular payments yourself. Review several months of transactions, not only the last few days. Annual subscriptions, insurance premiums and infrequent standing orders are easy to miss.

Closing in the app or online

Lloyds says the simplest route can be the mobile app: select the current account, open the account-management menu and choose the closure option where available. The app's search and “Message us 24/7” service can also guide customers through closing a current account. Online banking offers a similar messaging route.

Not every account or circumstance will be eligible for instant digital closure. An outstanding overdraft, a restriction, a joint-account issue or another linked product can require additional steps. If the option is not shown, do not assume the account has been closed; use another official Lloyds contact route and wait for confirmation.

What must be cleared first

Lloyds instructs customers who are not switching to change or cancel standing orders and Direct Debits, remove money from the account and repay any overdraft plus interest. Leave enough time for pending card payments and recent transactions to settle. Closing an account while you are still expecting refunds can also complicate reconciliation, so record outstanding items before submitting the request.

For a joint account, closure or removal of a holder can require additional involvement from the account holders. Lloyds states that removing a person from a joint account requires a branch visit and any overdraft debt must first be repaid.

Branch and postal closure

Customers who do not bank online can use a branch, post or telephone route. Lloyds says a branch closure requires the debit card and identification, with additional ID requirements for larger closing balances. Postal requests need enough information to identify the account and clear instructions for where any remaining funds should go.

Because account-closing instructions contain sensitive information, obtain the current postal address and document requirements from Lloyds immediately before sending anything. Do not send original identity documents unless the bank explicitly instructs you to do so through a verified process.

Your statements do not vanish immediately

Lloyds says customers can request transaction history after a current account has closed and during the following five years. When closing, you can request up to five years of prior transaction history, and Lloyds provides options for receiving it. If you continue to have another Lloyds account and retain digital access, some closed-account information may remain available through the Digital Inbox.

I would still download the statements you know you need before closure, particularly documents required for tax, benefits, a mortgage application, a dispute or proof of a large transaction. Access after closure exists, but retrieving a document later can take more effort than saving it while the account is live.

Do a “last 90 days” review

Before you close a Lloyds Bank account manually, scan at least the last three months of activity and mark every organisation that has paid money in or taken money out. Then look for annual transactions in an older statement. This catches forgotten insurance renewals, club fees, refunds and occasional transfers that a one-month review can miss.

Keep the closing confirmation with your final statement. If a later question arises about a refund, tax payment or disputed transaction, you then have a clear record of the account details and the date it ceased to operate. Closing is an administrative event; deleting a banking shortcut, destroying a card or leaving the balance at zero is not equivalent to closure.

If the account is restricted

If Lloyds has restricted the account, do not assume that submitting a closure request will bypass the restriction. The bank may need to complete fraud, identity or legal checks first. Ask what information is required, keep records of communications and use the complaints process if the issue remains unresolved. A restriction and a voluntary closure are different processes.

Before submitting the Lloyds closure request

Make sure the account is not still the destination for salary, benefits, refunds or another person’s regular transfer, and check that card transactions have settled. Download statements you may need because online access to a closed product can change. If you are moving to another bank, decide whether a full Current Account Switch Service switch is more appropriate than manual closure, since a full switch handles eligible regular payments and redirects money sent to the old account. Keep Lloyds’ closure confirmation and the final statement; they provide a clear record of the closing date and balance if a late payment or refund later needs tracing.

MYBANKANSWERS EXPERT VIEW

Victoria Hughes — Consumer Rights Specialist

Closing a bank account is simple only when the account has been made simple first. I would not submit the closure request while there are unresolved card refunds, a negative balance or Direct Debits you have not checked. Start with the transaction history. Identify incoming payments, standing orders, Direct Debits and subscriptions, and decide which of them belong on the replacement account. If you are genuinely moving your main banking elsewhere, compare that manual work with a full CASS switch, because the switching service is designed to move regular account payments and close the old account in a controlled process. I also strongly recommend saving important statements before closure even though Lloyds provides post-closure access for a period. A tax document or proof of payment is much easier to retrieve while you can still see the account normally. Finally, closure should end with confirmation from Lloyds, not with the customer merely deleting the app or cutting up the card. Those actions do not close a bank account. If the account has been your main account for years, I would also update emergency contacts, benefit agencies and any person who occasionally sends you money. Automated redirection from a switch is useful, but clean records are better than relying on redirection forever.
