Early loan settlement quote: how to check the figure

Paying a regulated personal loan off early can reduce future interest, but the amount due is not simply the balance shown in your app. Ask the lender for a formal settlement figure and check how long that quote remains valid.

Quick answer

Tell the lender you want to settle the loan early and request the settlement amount in writing. Regulated credit agreements provide for a rebate of future credit charges when debt is repaid early, subject to the agreement and Consumer Credit rules. Pay the quoted figure by its deadline rather than guessing from the outstanding balance.

The app balance and the settlement figure are not the same thing

Your displayed balance may not yet include the lender's early-settlement calculation, accrued interest to the settlement date or any adjustment allowed by the agreement. A formal quote tells you the amount that will actually close the account if received on time.

Ask for the quote before moving money from savings. If the lender says the figure is valid until 18 October, treat that date as part of the calculation: a payment arriving later may leave a small residual balance and the loan can remain open.

Start with a real-world test rather than the label on the screen. Picture a loan showing a £9,650 app balance while the lender quotes £9,800 to settle on a stated date. For 'The app balance and the settlement figure are not the same thing', write down the settlement statement, quote expiry date, interest assumptions, payment instructions and closure confirmation before changing anything. MoneyHelper says personal-loan borrowers can repay early and should ask the lender for a settlement statement showing the amount needed to clear the debt and the saving from early repayment. If the app shows £9,650 but the dated settlement statement says £9,800, paying £9,650 may leave a residual balance rather than close the loan

Early settlement normally reduces future credit charges

The Consumer Credit Act framework provides for a rebate of charges for credit when regulated borrowing is settled early. In plain English, you do not normally pay all of the future interest that would have accrued had you kept the loan to its original end date.

There can still be an adjustment permitted under the rules and agreement, so do not estimate savings by multiplying the monthly payment by the months remaining. Compare the lender's settlement figure with the total of the remaining scheduled payments.

Treat 'Early settlement normally reduces future credit charges' as a sequence of checks. Using a loan showing a £9,650 app balance while the lender quotes £9,800 to settle on a stated date, separate what is confirmed from what is only assumed, then compare the expected result with the actual result. Keep the settlement statement, quote expiry date, interest assumptions, payment instructions and closure confirmation. If the app shows £9,650 but the dated settlement statement says £9,800, paying £9,650 may leave a residual balance rather than close the loan If the evidence does not line up, pause before you create another payment, application or instruction because a second action can make the original problem harder to trace.

Worked example: compare the two totals

Imagine 20 monthly payments of £310 remain, so staying on schedule would mean £6,200 of future payments. The lender gives a settlement figure of £5,620 valid for 28 days. On those numbers, settling would reduce the remaining cash outflow by £580, before considering what your savings could earn or what other debts cost.

If paying £5,620 would wipe out your emergency fund, the mathematically cheaper option may still be poor household risk management. Keep enough accessible cash for essential expenses before using every spare pound to clear a relatively low-cost loan.

A useful decision rule for 'Worked example: compare the two totals' is to take one controlled action at a time. Do not pay the visible app balance if the lender says a different figure is required to close the agreement. In the example of a loan showing a £9,650 app balance while the lender quotes £9,800 to settle on a stated date, the next step should preserve the settlement statement, quote expiry date, interest assumptions, payment instructions and closure confirmation and leave you able to reverse course if new information appears. Use the lender settlement statement and exact payment instructions, then confirm the account is closed.

Pay using the lender’s exact instructions

The lender may require a bank transfer with a specific reference, a card payment or another route. Use the settlement instructions, not an old Direct Debit reference. After paying, check that the account shows zero and that the regular Direct Debit will no longer be collected.

Do not cancel the Direct Debit before the lender confirms how the settlement interacts with the next scheduled payment. If a payment is already being processed, cancelling it can complicate the final balance.

Build the fallback before the deadline becomes urgent. For 'Pay using the lender’s exact instructions', decide what you will do if the normal route fails: which official channel you will contact, which reference you will quote and what money or account access must remain available. If the app shows £9,650 but the dated settlement statement says £9,800, paying £9,650 may leave a residual balance rather than close the loan Keep the settlement statement, quote expiry date, interest assumptions, payment instructions and closure confirmation together in one dated note so support can see the sequence without asking you to reconstruct it from memory.

Keep confirmation that the loan is closed

Save the settlement quote, payment confirmation and closure letter or secure message. Check your credit files later to ensure the loan is reported as settled/closed rather than as a missed payment or outstanding balance.

If the lender continues collecting money or reports an incorrect balance after settlement, raise a formal complaint with the documents attached. A dated settlement quote and proof of payment make the problem straightforward to evidence.

Do not treat documentation as paperwork that comes after the problem. Under 'Keep confirmation that the loan is closed', the settlement statement, quote expiry date, interest assumptions, payment instructions and closure confirmation are part of the solution because they show the bank what happened and when. Do not pay the visible app balance if the lender says a different figure is required to close the agreement. Use the lender settlement statement and exact payment instructions, then confirm the account is closed rather than improvising with an unverified workaround.

Ask for the number that actually closes the loan

The balance shown in an app is not always the same as the amount required to settle a loan on a particular day. A settlement quote can include interest accrued to the settlement date and, where the agreement permits it, an early-settlement adjustment. If your app shows £6,240 outstanding and you simply transfer £6,240, you could still be left with a small residual balance. Ask specifically for a dated settlement figure and the payment instructions that apply to it.

Also compare settlement with a partial overpayment. If paying £3,000 now would cut future interest while leaving you with an emergency reserve, that may be more useful than emptying your savings to close the loan completely. The right comparison is not “debt versus no debt” in isolation; it is the guaranteed interest saved, any settlement cost, and the cash buffer you give up.

Finish 'Ask for the number that actually closes the loan' with a stop condition. Decide in advance what fact would make you wait, what fact would make you contact the bank and what fact would make you abandon the transaction or application entirely. In a loan showing a £9,650 app balance while the lender quotes £9,800 to settle on a stated date, the safest next step is the one that keeps essential money and evidence recoverable. MoneyHelper says personal-loan borrowers can repay early and should ask the lender for a settlement statement showing the amount needed to clear the debt and the saving from early repayment. Use the lender settlement statement and exact payment instructions, then confirm the account is closed if the provider cannot explain the next step clearly.

Ask for the number that closes the loan, not the number that merely describes today’s balance. A written settlement quote turns early repayment from guesswork into a clean financial decision.
